SOULMAN - THE TRUTH IS FOREVER

Just when you thought I was retired from the break mix game (I thought I was retired too, who knew)... I started working on this mix almost exactly one year ago and finally finished it today while the wife was at the movies with the kids watching Up (they said it was good). The original idea was to do a joint with all kinds of weird records from a bunch of different genres and countries. Somehow, it ended up being all rock records. Or at least records that would probably be filed in the rock section at your friendly neighborhood record shoppe. That's all I'll say about it, other than this is probably one of my weirder mixes- definitely maintaining the basic Soulman style but with some strange deviations from my traditional format as well. I gotta admit this is one of my favorites- I'm rarely pleased with the finished product of anything I do, but I must say that I was very happy with the results this time.
Peep it for yourself down below, and if you like it please feel free to share it with others, post it up on your blog or bootleg that schitt and sell it behind the counter at the corner bodega along with the apple blunts and loosies. It's free, do what you will with it.
P.S. - sorry but I didn't do a tracklist for this and I honestly don't even remember what more than half of these songs are... I just grabbed whatever rock records were laying around at the time and played whatever sounded half decent. Dollar bin to ultra rare psych... it's all over the place.

Nothing like a dose of the Real Schitt to shake off a case of the Mondays. This is niceness, thanks for sharing!

Great stuff per usual. Not complaining that it's free mind you, but is there no market to sell these anymore?

Phill Most AKA THE SOULMAN said...

JWF- I don't think so, not enough to make it worth the trouble, anyway. I always had problems getting a decent distribution situation for my mix cds, so i sold a lot of them directly. Nowadays I would think it would be even harder what with all the blog downloading and the like. So I'm doing it for free, just for the love of doing it. If people appreciate and want more, there will possibly be more.

... of course, this got bumped today ... thanks ... stupid drum dope ...

Yes sir! Thank you! You go the ill design moves Soulman, why not do some tshirts and sell as "print-on-demand"? That would probably make up for some of the nice mixes and stuff you dish out for free. I would definitely cop. Thanks again.

Listened two times yesterday, what can I say: top quality as usual! Some unusual and very interesting sounds. Linked on our blog too, hope it brings a lot of contacts here.

Incredible stuff here - really brings back that real mixing and digging prowess.

Yooooo... thanks to everybody for the comments. glad to see so many people are checking out the mix (over 1500 downloads in less than 2 days... not bad!) and seem to be liking it. more proof for myself to never be afraid to take risks... i felt like i was taking a LOT of risks with this one. my motto is just to play what I like and hopefully somebody else will like it too... i think those are words for any creative person to live by. Extra thanks to Joppa for putting "The Truth Is Forever" up on the blog... much appreciated.

That's how it should be ... Dj's SHOULD BE known for their ear, first, all of the other stuff comes after ... without the Real Dj's ear, you have a sucker Dj ... in other words, the vast majority of people who think they are HipHop Dj's are far from being HipHop because they have no ear and should be doing something other than Dj'ing to support and give back to the arts and culture ... wannabe Dj's are a serious cancer ... pardon me letting off on them, but my absence of tolerance for suckers is a known personality trait of mine ... .

Yo cousin! This schitt was well worth the one year of putting it together, seriously. You just single handedly kept a dieing art alive!

Might have to convince you to spin at a Hot Peas and Butta!

It's great to hear a mix that puts the music first. They just don't make 'em like this anymore... both mixes and the music itself. Like any good psychedelic, this mix is a real creeper.

Dude, this Real Schitt site is a vortex.

Thank you for the fantastic mix. I made a copy for my dad too ;-)

Oh man, this opens so nicely. This is what I needed today! Nice work.

sean said...

I heard some Hendrickson Road House on there, too. Glad I'm not the only beat-head obsessed with that record.

Phill Most AKA THE SOULMAN said...

Sean- that Hendrickson Road House album is great IMO. I liked it so much I actually tried to contact the lead singer and songwriter Sue Eakins just so I could tell her how great I thought her music from almost 40 years ago was. You can't help but wonder what happened to people as talented as she was, why she apparently never did anything else of note. That's the real truth about the music biz, though... some of the greatest stories are the ones that never happened.

this is great. you are the best.

Aw shit! My co-workers are going to hear this full blast tomorrow. They NEED the real hip hop whether they know it or not. Thanks again for another blow up---

Thanks for the mix. Like that Outlaw track by Joe Droukas. Really love the first track, don't know the artist.

I'm finally getting to listen to this (computer died). That song at the end where she's like "you're a fool & I laff at you" is crazy lol

Phill Most AKA THE SOULMAN said...

a-one- yeah, that song has been my schitt for YEARS. "put your husband on the shelf / give your wife to someone else / and ask them if they really know the difference". wooo... the lyrics are ridiculous on that joint.

I just create my blogspot, and put it online a podcast of groove, deep funk, some psychedelic records, and one or two pop grails.. feel free to listen to it...
I'm going to linked your blog, because there is no reason that a blog wich share all good music like yours doesn't turn ...

Of course you know it, and of course you already have 36 positive feedback comments here, so here is one more ... You are a beast on the selection, as only a Real Dj can be!

Phill Most AKA THE SOULMAN said...

Yo, thanks for the props AC (and everybody else too)... again, it is appreciated. Funny thing is I don't consider myself a DJ at all. I think the difference is that DJs have a job to do, and that's pleasing their crowd. If the crowd ain't feelin' you then you SUCK as a DJ. Me, I don't care about catering to anybody... I just play the records I like and either you like it too or you don't. I can't even imagine doing a party and trying to make everybody dance for 5 hours straight... man, I need some midtempo, some slow stuff, whateva... ANYTHING that sounds ill to my ear, whether you can dance to it or not. If it's not like that then I can't even be happy deejaying, which is why I don't do it. But mad respect to all the real DJs out there... takes real talent to be great at that, and I definitely admire the great ones.

yo soulman, could you help me out here. 19.31 minute mark - what track is that?? the guitar is raw!! and the vocals are real nice!!

more i listen to this mix, the better it gets.

new mix is nice too. keep this shit going. thank you.

that's Scorpion (not to be confused with The Scorpions) from their self titled lp on Tower... i think the song title is "One Of These Days". May even still have a copy for sale if you need it, holla on the e-mail if interested.

D said...

just to say, I've 'discovered' your mixes just yesterday Phill, and it's really refreshed my desire to dig and resume finding music... a long time collector, but last year or so have slowed right down... I love the two mixes I've heard of yours so far and am looking forward to checking the others. Thanks a lot for sharing! ...DMS...

Anonymous said...

hi,

brilliant compilation. This has spurred me on to dig more old stuff! Have been passing this round to everyone i know after i found it recently on soul strut. The track that has the bboy drums(good doubling) and the sax riff.."promise that you made to me" is fire! Is it a lene lovitch vocal?? Thought it could be from her early funkpunks days. Do you remember who it was? It would settle a bet. Thanks man

Annie

Phill Most AKA THE SOULMAN said...

Hi Annie! Thanks so much for writing! I wanted to get right back to you with the answer to your question but, alas... I have no idea what you are talking about. There's nothing on this mix that sounds like what you described, is there? I don't think so. Methinks one of us is tripping off the acid, Annie... and it's not me. Take care!

Anonymous said...

Hi Soulman,

I Havent done acid since i gave up droppin XTC and I havent done that since i stopped smokin crack which i havent done since i gave up free basing ketamine which i gave up etc.....

I GOT A TIME CODE 29.40 !!!!!

Who is that singer she is ace!

annie

Phill Most AKA THE SOULMAN said...

oooooohhhhh annie... i'm such a dumbass. please forgive me for mistaking you for being on mind bending drugs when obviously tis I who be's on that ketamine. surprisingly, you are the first person to inquire about that particular record (which is one of my personal faves from the mix). the group is called Caterpilla (i think i'm spelling that right but maybe not) and the song is from one of their two very rare psych holy grail albums. I think the name of the song is "Promises". Glad you liked the mix and my apologies again for my dimwitted joking... blame it on the a-a-a-a-a-adderall.

Anonymous said...

dude!

Thanks. wow its a psych album??? its sound like something from 99 records or a Slits record, amazing. gonna have 2 hunt that schitt down. That is my fave part of the mix. oh and the Hendrickson stuff, thanks for bringing it into my life. keep doing what u do.

xx
