SOULMAN RADIO: THE 92-93 BEATS MIXSHOW

Before I break out for awhile for my late summer vay-cay, I leave you with this- a 30+ minute mix featuring some beats taken straight off of a couple of my beat tapes from around 1992-1993. And when I say straight off of the beat tapes, I mean STRAIGHT off of them... all kinds of distortion, tape hiss, muddy bass, you name it. Everything that you need for THAT REALEST SCHITT. Of course I am severely biased and possibly even on my own d**k somewhat, but awww f**k it... i don't apologize for that. I ain't no real for real deejay but the schitt is bangin' regardless- there, I said it. If you disagree that's cool, but you're not my friend anyway. Alla y'all who are friends and who like it raw- please download this mix, pass it along to any real schitters in your community and enjoy. SOULMAN 2001 SPACED ODDITIES PT. 2

Here's the second part of that SOULMAN "2001 SPACED ODDITIES" tape-slash-cd that I dropped on y'all a couple weeks or so ago. As you can see in the pics above, the cover art for my mix was based on a promo album that Radio Shack hit their customers off with back in the days (hence the "that realistic schitt" title of the first post). I'm sure most dudes who have gotten their fingers even a little bit dusty have seen this lp in the dollar crates a few times... kinda cool, has a little groove (a cover of the "2001" theme) that I set part one of the mix off with. Trust me, the Soulman CD and / or tape is a whole lot rarer than the Realistic promo lp... I assume everybody in America who bought a transistor radio back in the 70s got one of those records.

Back to the old school, y'all. While going through some of my old school tapes last week to find some ill schitt to bless y'all with, I came across one I didn't even know I had. Audubon Ballroom, 1981 (probably not the same show as the one advertised in the flyer shown here, though). Members of the Fantastic Five, Busy Bee and Grandmaster Caz all get loose on this one over beats like Say It Loud I'm Black And I'm Proud, Heartbeat, Catch A Groove, Bounce Rock Skate Roll, etc. Plus we hear some stuff getting played that some cats who weren't around back then might not expect to hear at an old school hip hop jam, like the Whispers' "It's A Love Thing" and even the sugar-sweet bubblegum of Chee Chee and Peppy's "I Know I'm In Love".
But the part I REALLY dig on this tape is where the Original Kev (aka Kevie Kev aka Waterbed Kev of the L Brothers, Fantastic Romantic Five, Fantastic Freaks, Furious Five and Furious Lovers- you did know he was down with those last two as well, right?) rhymes right over top of the Sugarhill Gang's "8th Wonder" and flips the words, turning into a Weird Al Yankovic-style parody. For instance, the Gang's line "and baby dolls and all you daddy-o's / you better get ready to move your toes" is transformed into "and baby dolls and all you pregnant hoes / you better get ready for maternity clothes"! Now, I used to hear brothers in the streets sayin' some of these rhymes back in the days, but I never heard any of this on an actual live jam tape. And come to find I've had this schitt for yeeeeeeears. Whoa.
BTW, interesting ancedote about Kev in the recently released Wildstyle The Sampler book by Charlie Ahearn (required real schitt reading, of course) where Charlie tells how he was with the Fantastic right before they headed out for the big Sugarhill Convention at the Armory back in 1981, and Kev sticks his pistol in his pants on some "i wish somebody would try to test me tonight" schitt. Funny how it was just as real in the field way back then- maybe even more so- yet the emcees of that era didn't feel the need to glorify their harsh realities anywhere near as much as they do today. And they say, children... what does it all mean?

New video for Nicole Willis & The Soul Investigators' "If This Ain't Love". OMG I love this schitt. This song is real special to me because I first heard it during a very bad time, one of the worst times in my life. It actually kinda helped get me through that difficult period, on some "the sun's gonna come back out" type schitt. And guess what? The sun came back out. It always does (no matter what Harvey Scales might say). Glad to see that they did the song justice with a real nice vid. NICOLE WILLIS IS PRESIDENT.

THE FUNKY FLORIDIAN WHO ROCKS THE HOUSE AT POST MERIDIAN

I don't regret a lot of things in my life, man, but I got a few hip hop-related things that I KNOW I'm gonna always regret. Near the top of that short list (maybe at the very top) is that I wasn't able to put out my dude Willie Evans Jr's debut album on my World Of Beats record label in 2006. Oh, I wanted to- STILL want to. For those who ain't up, Willie is in my opinion like the best kept secret in rap. Jacksonville, Florida's finest. Has done amazing beats for Def Jux (Mr. Lif, Perceptionists), Rasco, Eddie Meeks, etc. Toured all over with his group The AB's (formerly know as Asamov), who put out a truly siiiiick album , "And Now", in 2005.

Regardless of that Willie Ev record never dropping on World Of Beats- I'll take the blame for that, but IMO the real blame goes to today's musical climate that is just not indy-real schitt-friendly- the fact remains that my man is one of the dopest cats out here today. On the beats AND the rhymes. Luckily, it looks like you really can't keep a good man down- Willie was recently selected to be a member of the Rawkus 50... so that Willie Ev solo appears to be going down after all. That's what I'm talkin' bout.

What I'm gonna do is hit you with the initial songs that got me proclaiming that WILLIE EVANS JR. IS THE FUTURE back in 2005 (or was it 2004? time flies, don't it?), plus drop the Wu-Tang Clan "C.R.E.A.M. (Willie Evans Jr. Remix)" video. Get ready to liquidate your ass-ets to go purchase his cass-ettes...
